ISO 27001 Training Malaysia: Practical ISMS Skills for Risk Assessment, Annex A Controls and Internal Audit Readiness

A practical Malaysia guide to building the capability that turns ISO/IEC 27001:2022 requirements into risk decisions, usable controls, operating evidence and internal-audit confidence.

The short answer: Effective ISO 27001 training gives managers, ISMS owners, IT, HR, procurement and internal auditors practical skill to define scope, assess risks, select and evidence controls, maintain a Statement of Applicability, perform internal audit and improve the ISMS after findings or change.

1. What ISO 27001 training should help a Malaysian organisation do

ISO identifies ISO/IEC 27001:2022 as the published ISMS requirements standard. It provides a framework to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve information-security management through risk management. [1]

For Malaysian organisations, the training should connect the standard to real services, information, systems, cloud platforms, people and suppliers. It should not stop at clause awareness. Participants need to practise the decisions and evidence that make an ISMS work: why a risk matters, who owns it, which controls are appropriate, what evidence shows a control operates and how internal audit checks effectiveness.

Training outcomeSkill after the sessionUseful workplace output
ISMS foundationExplain the business purpose, ISMS scope, interested parties, roles and security objectives.Draft scope statement, stakeholder map and owner matrix.
Risk assessmentDescribe a repeatable approach for risk identification, analysis, treatment and review.Risk-register sample, treatment decisions and ownership.
Annex A / SoA decisionsExplain why controls are selected, how they connect to risk and how the Statement of Applicability is maintained.SoA working sheet with rationale, owner and evidence.
Operational evidenceIdentify records, reviews, tests and approvals that demonstrate a control operates.Evidence map and control calendar.
Internal auditPlan, conduct, report and follow up a process-based ISMS audit.Audit plan, interview prompts, audit report and action tracker.
ImprovementEscalate incidents/findings and feed lessons into control, risk and management-review decisions.Corrective-action workflow and management-review inputs.

2. Who should attend ISO 27001 training in Malaysia?

ISO 27001 is not only an IT topic. Information-risk decisions affect business management, service owners, access administrators, people who procure external providers, staff who handle client/personal information and the team that audits the management system. The right audience follows the ISMS scope and operating model.

Role or functionWhy the training mattersPractical ISMS contribution
Top management / sponsorLeadership sets objective, resources, priorities and risk appetite.Approves scope, policy, objectives, resources and management-review actions.
ISMS coordinatorConnects requirements, risk, owners, evidence and improvement work.Maintains programme rhythm, facilitates risk review and tracks actions.
IT, security and cloud teamsTechnical practices often provide important control evidence.Own access, change, vulnerability, logging, backup/recovery and incident practices as relevant.
HR / people managersSecurity starts before onboarding and continues through role change and exit.Support relevant awareness, role changes and leaver controls.
Procurement / supplier ownersSuppliers and cloud services can create material dependencies.Define security due diligence, contractual expectations and supplier review.
Internal auditorsInternal audit checks whether the ISMS conforms and works in practice.Plan, interview, sample evidence, report findings and follow up actions.

3. Practical learning module: scope, context and risk assessment

Begin with the business, not with templates. Participants define why the organisation needs an ISMS—such as managing cyber risk, meeting customer expectations, improving governance or preparing for certification—then consider the boundary of services, people, information, technology, locations and outsourced activities.

Risk assessment needs clear criteria, a method to identify relevant scenarios and conditions, impact and likelihood thinking, ownership, treatment decisions and review triggers. The objective is not a long list of theoretical risks. It is a decision process that changes priorities and leads to controlled action.

Risk-workshop promptTraining questionEvidence or decision
Information/service valueWhat information, process or service needs protection and why?Information/service map and accountable owner.
Realistic scenarioWhat could compromise confidentiality, integrity or availability?Risk statement linked to a process, system, person or supplier.
Existing safeguardsWhat already reduces likelihood or impact, and does it operate?Control evidence, test result or a gap.
Risk treatmentWill the organisation modify, retain, avoid or share the risk?Treatment action, risk acceptance/approval or transfer decision.
Review triggerWhat change, incident or result should cause reassessment?Review frequency and change/incident trigger.

Practical test: A participant should explain one real risk from end to end: the service or information involved, scenario, owner, control decision, evidence and response when the risk changes.

4. Practical learning module: Annex A controls and the Statement of Applicability

ISO/IEC 27002 provides guidance on information-security controls, while ISO/IEC 27001 specifies ISMS requirements. [2] Training should avoid treating Annex A as a one-size-fits-all list. It should show how risk, applicable legal/contractual requirements, business needs and existing practices inform control decisions.

The Statement of Applicability is the bridge between risk treatment and control operation. A usable SoA should identify why a control is included or excluded, which risk/requirement it addresses, who owns it, how it operates and what evidence supports it. Review it when relevant business, technical, supplier or threat conditions change.

Control decision areaWhat participants practiseEvidence to discuss
Access and identityMap joiner/mover/leaver, privileged access, review and escalation decisions.Access approvals, periodic review, exception approval and exit checklist.
People and awarenessMatch awareness and competence activity to roles and risk.Training plan, attendance, role-specific content and follow-up evidence.
Supplier/cloud securityIdentify due diligence, contract, assurance and ongoing review appropriate to the service.Supplier assessment, security clauses, service review and action tracker.
Incident managementLink reporting, triage, containment, investigation, communication and learning.Incident ticket, lessons learned and corrective-action review.
Backup/recoveryDefine ownership, frequency, protection and proportionate recovery testing.Backup status, restore-test result, exception and remediation record.
Technology/changeConsider security impact when systems, configurations or services change.Change ticket, test/approval evidence, risk review and updated documentation.

5. Practical learning module: evidence, internal audit and corrective action

A course should distinguish a policy from proof that it operates. In an ISO 27001 audit, an organisation may need to explain its method, demonstrate current records and show how it responds when something does not work. SIRIM QAS describes Stage 1 as documentation/readiness assessment and Stage 2 as evaluation of implementation and effectiveness. [4]

Internal-auditor training creates more value when it teaches an audit of a process rather than a document checklist. BSI Malaysia states that ISO/IEC 27001 internal-auditor training includes skills to plan, conduct, report and follow up an ISMS audit in accordance with ISO 19011. [3]

Audit focusQuestions for auditorsExamples of evidence
Scope and objectivesDoes the ISMS boundary reflect real services, dependencies and objectives?Scope, context, service maps, objectives and owner interviews.
Risk and SoACan decisions be traced from risk to treatment, control and evidence?Risk register, SoA, action plan, approvals and review records.
Control operationDoes the activity operate as described, and what happens when it fails?Tickets, logs, review records, tests, exceptions and actions.
Supplier managementAre important external providers assessed, approved and reviewed appropriately?Supplier register, due diligence, assurance evidence and review outputs.
ImprovementAre incidents, findings and nonconformities corrected and checked for effectiveness?Finding report, root-cause analysis, action record and effectiveness review.
Leadership oversightDoes management receive useful security information and make decisions?Management-review inputs, decisions, resources and actions.

8. ISO 27001 training, PDPA and certification: keep the boundaries clear

Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Commissioner provides organisation guidance for data controllers under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709). [5] ISO 27001 training can help a team manage information-security risk relevant to personal data. It does not establish compliance with every PDPA obligation, data-breach requirement, sector rule or customer contract. Those requirements must be assessed separately.

Training does not issue an ISO 27001 certificate. An independent certification body evaluates an organisation’s management system. SIRIM QAS states that it does not provide training or consultancy in order to preserve certification-service impartiality. [4]

Training boundary: Practical learning builds capability. It does not guarantee certification, audit results, cybersecurity outcomes, PDPA compliance or customer approval. The organisation remains responsible for its risk decisions, controls, evidence and obligations.

FAQ

ISO 27001 Training Malaysia: professional answers

What is ISO 27001 training in Malaysia?

ISO 27001 training helps participants understand and apply the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001:2022 to their organisation’s ISMS. Practical training can cover scope, risk assessment, risk treatment, Annex A control decisions, Statement of Applicability, evidence, internal audit and continual improvement.

Is ISO 27001 the same as ISO/IEC 27001:2022?

ISO 27001 is common shorthand. The official requirements standard is ISO/IEC 27001:2022, jointly published by ISO and IEC. ISO identifies it as the current published ISMS requirements edition, with a 2024 climate-action amendment.

What is the difference between ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27002?

ISO/IEC 27001 specifies ISMS requirements. ISO/IEC 27002 provides information-security control guidance and best-practice recommendations that can support an ISMS. ISO/IEC 27002 is not itself a certifiable standard.

Who should attend ISO 27001 training?

The appropriate audience may include top management, ISMS coordinators, IT and security personnel, HR, procurement, service owners and internal auditors. The right mix depends on the ISMS scope and which people own security risks, controls, records and improvement actions.

Does ISO 27001 training cover internal-audit skills?

It can. A practical internal-auditor module should cover audit planning, evidence sampling, interviewing, findings, reporting, follow-up and corrective-action effectiveness. BSI Malaysia describes ISO/IEC 27001 internal-auditor training as developing skills to plan, conduct, report and follow up an ISMS audit in accordance with ISO 19011.

Does ISO 27001 training guarantee certification or PDPA compliance?

No. Training improves understanding and practical capability, but it does not guarantee ISO 27001 certification, cybersecurity outcomes, PDPA compliance, customer approval or an audit result. The organisation must implement and maintain its own ISMS, while independent certification and legal/privacy determinations are made by the appropriate body or adviser.
